Struggles again
Luis Suarez recorded one shot (zero on goal) in Tuesday's 1-0 win over DR Congo.
Analysis: Suarez had a difficult night, isolated up front and further hampered by Congo's defensive setup of three center backs which gave him little room to operate. He was barely involved throughout, registering the least touches of any outfield player in the game. His only shot came courtesy of a Congo error, and outside of that he failed to make any real impact before being substituted off in the 58th minute for Jhon Cordoba. It has been a disappointing tournament so far for the forward, particularly given the strong form he was carrying into it, having been the top scorer in Liga Portugal with Sporting prior to the competition.
Quiet night up top in win
Suarez had one tackle (one won) in Wednesday's 3-1 win against Uzbekistan.
Analysis: Suarez started Colombia's World Cup opener but was unable to find the scoresheet, as he didn't contribute to any shots and ended his shift with one chance created, on tackle and eight passes. He worked to hold up play and bring teammates into the game throughout, though Uzbekistan's compact defensive setup limited his clear-cut chances. Suarez will look to get on the scoresheet himself as Colombia head into their second game against DR Congo on June 23.
Starting striker for Los Cafeteros
Suarez has been named in Colombia's World Cup squad and is expected to be a key attacking option for manager Lorenzo throughout the competition.
Analysis: Suarez ends what has been a breakthrough campaign at Sporting CP, scoring 38 goals and providing nine assists across 53 appearances in all competittions in a season that announced him as one of the most clinical strikers in European football outside the traditional top five leagues. The Colombian forward brings pace, intelligent movement and a lethal finishing ability that gives manager Lorenzo a direct and dangerous option in the final third, and his prolific output in Portugal is the clearest indication yet that he is ready to perform at the very highest level. Suarez heads into the World Cup with enormous confidence after a breakout club season and the motivation to prove himself on the biggest stage in international football.
